Circus
Keela is taking the grandkids to the circus today. It is a cold blistery day with
the temperature near freezing. The circus will be in a nice arena in downtown
Kansas City. I was asked to go along but with my health I’m not able to walk the
distance that would be necessary. I feel excitement for the grandkids because I
remember previous circuses that I have been able to attend. What is there that
makes us want to see such a show? Is it  the animals, the acrobats, the clowns or
something completely different. Each of us would have our own answer for that
question.

When I was young the circus would come to our small town. Even those
circuses were smaller in size the excitement was just as big. Back then when the
circus came to town they set up a gigantic tent, hence the name “The Big Top.” It
was a show unto itself just watching the big top being set up. If it was truly a good
circus they would be billed as being a three ring circus. That meant instead of just
one act going on at a time there would be three different acts going on at once.
Constant action and almost more than a person could take in all at once.

Just as we would have different reasons for our excitement about attending the
circus, we have different reasons for our excitement for attending worship services.
Some would enjoy the singing, some the preaching, some the prayers and still
others would prefer the fellowship with fellow Christians. Any and all of the above
are things we should enjoy about the opportunity to gather together. All of the above
is about what we selfishly receive from worship. What we prefer.

Worship should be about God and not about us. Who does God seek to
worship him?
John 4:23-24 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true
worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh
such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him MUST worship him in
spirit and in truth.”
Worship is about God and not our preferences. Our preferences
in worship may change with the times, but God’s preferences remain the same
through the ages. We still need to worship God in spirit and in truth.

The place that we worship God is not important. It can be in the open air or a
grand building that we have erected. What is important is to worship in spirit and in
truth. It does not matter the size of the group that we worship God with. It could be
thousands or a group much smaller.
Matthew 18:20 “Foe where two or three are
gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Are you worshipping in spirit and in truth?
